On August 22, 2023, José Julio Sarria was posthumously inducted into the California Hall of Fame, receiving one of the state’s highest honors. Sarria was a World War II veteran and renowned performer, celebrated as a foundational figure in LGBTQ civil rights history. In 1961, he became the first openly gay candidate to run for public office in the United States, paving the way for visible LGBTQ leadership in American politics.
In 1965, Sarria founded the Imperial Court of San Francisco, where he was crowned Empress I “The Widow Norton” ultimately establishing the International Imperial Court System. This organization has grown to include over 65 chapters across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, making it one of the world’s oldest and largest LGBTQ charitable groups. Sarria’s bold vision united communities for advocacy, social justice, and charitable service.
The induction ceremony, presented by Governor Gavin Newsom and First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom, marked the second time a drag performer has been recognized in the California Hall of Fame. Sarria’s honor reflects his enduring legacy and impact, ensuring his remarkable life and contributions are permanently celebrated among California’s most distinguished leaders, innovators, and cultural icons.
